BMW F10, F11 and F07 Headlight Condensation and Water Damage: Common Questions
How much does F10 headlight condensation repair cost?
Repairing condensation or water in a BMW F10, F11 or F07 headlight starts at £275.00 + VAT per headlight. That's a standard refurbishment, for a headlight that still works but has condensation or water inside: a new lens, uprated gaskets, new seals and an internal chemical clean, then pressure and water testing. A full refurbishment and repair is £375.00 + VAT per headlight, for one that has stopped working or shows iDrive errors, and adds a new or rebuilt internal harness. The price is the same for halogen, xenon, adaptive xenon and adaptive LED headlights.
If water has damaged the TMS control unit, a genuine BMW unit is £416.00 + VAT per headlight, fitted, coded, initialised and taught in (price correct at the time of writing), or we fit your own at no charge; on adaptive LED headlights, the headlight's control modules are priced after assessment. Fitting at our Oldbury workshop is £70.00 + VAT per headlight, with a same-day exchange on F10 and F11 Pre LCI headlights and LCI xenon; or send them in, with a DHL return from £35.00 + VAT. Every refurbishment carries our 2-year guarantee. Everything that's included is on the BMW F10 headlight condensation repair service page.
What are the signs of condensation or water in an F10 headlight?
Condensation or droplets behind the lens; water pooling inside the headlight; lights flickering or failing one at a time; and iDrive errors such as "Side/daytime lights fault", "Turn indicator front failure" or "Headlight vertical aim control failure", often coming and going. Condensation affects almost every F10 Saloon, F11 Touring and F07 GT.
Why do BMW F10, F11 and F07 headlights get condensation?
Over time the factory seals degrade and fail, letting moisture and water into the headlight. It doesn't get better on its own: once water is inside, it damages the electrics, the TMS control unit above all.
What does "Side/daytime lights fault" mean on an F10?
It usually means water has damaged the TMS, the control unit that runs the headlight's functions. Functions can stop one at a time, and the error often comes and goes at first. Other iDrive errors pointing the same way are "Daytime/parking lamp malfunction", "Turn indicator front failure", "Adaptive headlights failure" and "Headlight vertical aim control failure".
How much is an F10 TMS module replacement?
A genuine BMW TMS from us is £416.00 + VAT per headlight, fitted, coded, initialised and taught in (price correct at the time of writing), and carries its own 2-year guarantee with BMW. We'll also fit, code, initialise and teach in one you supply at no charge, but we don't recommend aftermarket units: quality varies, on adaptive headlights they often make the projector jitter or the indicator time out, and a part you supply isn't covered by our guarantee. On adaptive LED headlights, the headlight's control modules are investigated and priced after assessment.
Is condensation or water in my headlight a problem?
Yes. Once the seals have failed, the condensation or water doesn't clear on its own. It damages the electrics, the TMS control unit above all, and can fail the MOT. Every week it's left, more parts short out, so what could be a standard refurbishment can become a full one, plus a TMS. Getting it in early keeps the cost down.
Is a little condensation normal?
On the F10, F11 and F07, a little misting or condensation is usually a sign of things to come: once the seals start to fail, it tends to get worse, not better. The service page has reference images to compare yours with. Getting it in early keeps the cost down.
Will water damage fail the MOT?
It can. A headlight that isn't working, or water affecting the beam pattern, can be a reason for an MOT failure. Getting it in early keeps it to a standard refurbishment: every week water sits in the headlight, more parts short out.
Will my car warranty cover headlight condensation?
It depends on your warranty's policy, so check with your warranty provider directly. If it isn't covered, this estimate is what the repair costs with us.
Why is the TMS extra?
The TMS is a separate control unit fitted to the headlight that runs its functions. The refurbishment repairs the headlight itself; a TMS damaged by water has to be replaced, so it's priced on its own. We fit a genuine BMW one, or yours, and code, initialise and teach it in.
Standard or full: when is it decided?
Decided with the headlight open: if the internal harness is in good condition, it's a standard refurbishment; if it needs replacing, it's a full refurbishment with a new or rebuilt internal harness. We show you photos and ask before any extra cost.
Will the other headlight go too?
Often. On the F10 and F11, the other side usually follows within 3 to 6 months. Caught early, it's usually a standard refurbishment.
Why not just buy a new headlight?
A new BMW headlight costs approximately £500.00 to £2,100.00 + VAT each, depending on the type (correct at the time of writing), and its seals degrade and fail the same way. Our refurbishment fits a new lens, uprated gaskets and new seals, then pressure and water tests the headlight.
Should I buy a used or aftermarket headlight instead?
A used headlight has the same factory seals, which degrade and fail the same way; it may already have water in it, and it comes without a guarantee. Aftermarket headlights vary in fit and quality and aren't BMW parts. Our repair gives you a refurbished genuine BMW headlight, with a new lens, uprated gaskets and new seals, and a 2-year guarantee.
How long does it take?
Three days from when we receive your headlights, sent or dropped off by booking; we can usually book them in within a week. With fitting at our Oldbury workshop, an exchange takes 2 hours per headlight, 4 hours for a pair; otherwise your car stays with us for 3 days. You pick your fitting date on the BMW F10 headlight repair service page.
What guarantee do I get?
Two years on all refurbishment and repair work we carry out. A genuine BMW TMS carries its own 2-year guarantee with BMW; a part you supply isn't covered by us. Full terms are on the service page.
Which cars and headlights are covered?
The BMW 5 Series F10 Saloon and F11 Touring, Pre LCI (2010 to mid-2013) and LCI (mid-2013 to 2017), with halogen, xenon, adaptive xenon or adaptive LED headlights; and the F07 GT, Pre LCI, with halogen, xenon or adaptive xenon headlights. Same-day exchange is available on F10 and F11 Pre LCI halogen, xenon and adaptive xenon, and LCI xenon.
Where are you, and do you cover my area?
Keep Your Car Safe (KYCS) is at Unit 20, Fountain Business Park, Fountain Lane, Oldbury, West Midlands B69 3FH, near Birmingham, open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm, by appointment. Call us on 0121 295 1900. We refurbish headlights from across the UK: DHL collection and return covers mainland Great Britain and Northern Ireland; the Highlands, islands and remote areas are by separate quote. Automotive lighting is all we do, and has been since 2012.
Can I fix F10 headlight condensation myself?
We don't recommend it. Don't try to dry the headlight out with a hairdryer or heat gun: heat can damage the headlight and its wiring. Don't open or reseal it yourself either: a headlight that's been opened can't go on exchange, and usually costs more to put right. The best thing you can do is book in early, because the longer water sits inside, the more damage it does.
